For Immediate Release
Batchewana First Nation Chief and Council have approved Statistics Canada to conduct the 2026 Census of Population within our community. The census takes place every five years and provides important information that helps communities plan for the future and make informed, evidence-based decisions. It is the only data source that offers consistent and detailed statistics for small areas such as First Nation communities.
Census data supports planning and development in areas such as:
- Indigenous language and education programs
- Community health and social services
- Business and economic opportunities
- Evaluation and improvement of programs and services
It is also an important tool for emergency preparedness and understanding changing community needs over time.
Census collection is scheduled to begin in May 2026 and will take place in:
- Rankin Reserve 15D
- Goulais Bay 15A
- Obadjiwan 15E
In preparation, Statistics Canada will begin hiring for census positions. Preference will be given to local community members, providing an opportunity for employment within Batchewana First Nation. Please watch for postings which will be coming out very soon.
Statistics Canada will also be working closely with the community through local guides to ensure respectful engagement and to provide further information about the process and job opportunities.
