Batchewana First Nation, January 31, 2026 – Batchewana First Nation Chief and Council wish to inform members of an important update regarding the Robinson Huron Treaty Litigation Fund (RHTLF).
We have been advised that Batchewana First Nation may receive a portion of returned legal fees as early as February 9, 2026. This follows an October 28, 2025 decision by Justice Myers of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, which ordered that $232 million, plus interest, be returned to the RHTLF and treated as settlement proceeds.
In accordance with the Compensation Disbursement Agreement (CDA), these returned legal fees will be distributed among the Lake Huron First Nations. Batchewana First Nation’s share of this distribution is $15,974,242.93, which is expected to be received on or about February 9, 2026 (which is earlier than we initially expected).
Chief and Council will set this update as a top priority to discuss at the next Council meeting and begin formulating a plan regarding the use and management of these funds. Members will be kept informed as decisions are made and as more information becomes available.
We remain committed to transparency and will continue to provide updates to the community in a timely manner.
Miigwetch,
Batchewana First Nation Chief and Council
